Berlin: A Novel Of German Reunification

West Berlin: a world-famous city of culture, an oasis of freedom completely walled in by two impenetrable concrete walls, guarded 24/7 by Kalashnikov-47-wielding East German guards, surrounded by a desolate sea of gray WW2 ruins and communism even more extreme than the Soviet Union’s.
So how could it be that this island of capitalism is known everywhere as “The Heroin Capital Of Europe?”

Meet Erich Mielke, the head of the East German Stasi: the man who knows everything that ever happens, within East Germany and everywhere else. Everything the NSA is doing now, the Stasi did better. Mielke’s new plot is to destroy this oasis of art and culture whose existence he blames for all the troubles in East Germany. Mielke’s plan is a huge success, but it doesn’t destroy West Berlin at all.
Instead, it makes the Stasi wealthy.
